Catchment Manager

Could your next career move make a big impact on the environment?

Healthy rivers are essential for both humans and nature, but they are under serious threat from pollution, climate change, habitat loss and water scarcity. Tackling these issues requires holistic understanding and an effective approach.

South East Rivers Trust [SERT] is seeking a passionate and ambitious Catchment Manager to lead our growing River Catchment Partnership programme in Surrey, South London and Kent.

The role is part of SERT’s Science and Partnerships team, which is at the heart of SERT’s vision for healthy, thriving rivers in the south east. The team brings together multiple stakeholders, from landowners to businesses to local community groups, to collaborate and drive a holistic catchment based approach to understanding issues that are impacting the rivers and their catchment areas. And most importantly, to identify the solutions and projects that will restore them.

As a Catchment Manager, you will lead, chair and manage a one or two Catchment Partnerships across Surrey, South London and Kent. The role will suit a natural leader who is passionate about water environments, and who possesses strong communication skills and the relevant scientific and/or technical knowledge in one or more of the following areas:

  • land management
  • wetland design
  • aquatic biodiversity
  • habitat enhancement
  • nature-based solutions
  • biodiversity net gain
  • natural flood management
  • fisheries science
  • water resource management

Using evidence-based data you are able to understand and distil issues the catchments face. You should be comfortable working closely with partners to co-design solutions and projects that will provide multiple benefits which will ultimately improve the health of the river and its catchment. Additionally, you will support a growing team of Catchment Officers who each lead their own Catchment Partnerships efforts.

Now in our 21st year, SERT is one of the largest regional rivers trusts, protecting rivers across the south east of England for future generations to come.
