The official website for our Preventing Plastic Pollution project is now live. Preventing Plastic Pollution (PPP) is an exciting collaboration between 18 organisations across England and France working to prevent plastic pollution in the Channel. It is an Interreg FCE project, funded by the European Development Fund. As the public are becoming increasingly aware of the scale and severity of plastic pollution, this project will develop a model to gather data on the amount and likely sources of pollution at seven pilot sites: Brest Harbour, Bay of Douarnenez, Bay of Veys, Poole Harbour, and the Medway, Tamar, and Great Ouse estuaries. The information gathered from research in these areas will allow the cross-Channel partnerships to tackle some of the four million tonnes of plastic waste that enter the sea via rivers every year. Using a targeted approach, experts will evaluate plastic pollution entering the catchments and identify pollution hotspots from source to sea. They will assess the cost-effectiveness and sustainability of current and innovative approaches and create a portfolio of removal methods to prevent and manage pollution. The new website will be an online hub for the project, sharing key data and reports from the experts’ research. It will also include dedicated events, activities and resources sections which offer multiple opportunities for the general public to get involved with preventing plastic pollution themselves. Jayne Mann, Marketing & Communications Manager at The Rivers Trust, said “we are delighted to be launching this new project website which we hope to keep updated with a number of useful reports and resources during this ambitious three-year project. We are especially pleased that the website will give people the chance to both learn from the project and to take action themselves, whether that is by attending local litter picking events or downloading lifestyle guides on reducing plastic at home.” Anyone can help to prevent plastic pollution, and we are encouraging all members of the public to get involved with the project now by filling out this quick survey to share their knowledge and perception of the issue. Visit preventingplasticpollution.com now to find out more.
