One of the national network of Rivers Trusts, we are focused on the Arun, Rother and Western Streams Catchments in West Sussex — home to a range of special and rare species and habitats, including sea trout and otter and rare chalk streams. Our aim is to help improve local water quality and river habitats which are under pressure from climate change, pollution, water abstraction, development and more. As our Trust matures and grows, we recognise the need to strengthen our board of Trustees, specifically with fundraising experience. As a Trustee, you’ll have the opportunity to shape the future of our riverscapes. You’ll work alongside a dedicated group of individuals to protect and preserve this vital ecosystem. Evidence Programme Manager

Purpose of the job This post is essential to the smooth running of the highly active Evidence Team and Programme, supporting and assisting the effective management of projects through their full life cycle. Your role is to develop and deliver all aspects of the Evidence Programme – from supervision of the Evidence Team to development and funding of projects and expanding the scope of the Evidence Program in line with Thames21’s charitable objectives and 5‑year plan. Projects are centred on all forms of evidence – from technical and specialist (real time probes and development of models) to citizen science (biological, chemical and geomorphological data) – to inform and drive catchment decision making, including installation of nature-based treatment systems to mitigate pollution. Projects vary from local and national scale to international collaborations. We deliver a number of exciting projects including constructed wetlands, Natural Flood Management, Road Runoff pollution and solutions modelling and EU-funded projects. Work is based in London, the Thames Basin and occasionally more widely in the UK and internationally. Additional requirements may include supporting other Thames21 projects and funding applications, as the need arises. Main Duties and Responsibilities You will oversee and manage delivery of diverse Evidence Team projects. You will also develop your team’s scope, strategy and action plan in order to grow the team to deliver 5‑year plan targets work closely with expert (e.g. statutory bodies, authorities, NGOs and academics) and non-expert (e.g. community groups and volunteers) stakeholders to develop, fund and deliver projects within the Evidence Programme and oversee their management. You will also work closely with the Assistant Head of Improving Rivers and other members of the Thames21 team to develop funding applications and steer the direction of the Evidence Programme. Tasks will include:Development and delivery of projects through the Evidence Programme on the themes of water quality and quantity, identification of suitable nature-based treatment solutions and their functioning after installation, landscape recovery and climate resilience.Project Management for the continued success of projects, identifying ways to mitigate risks where possible.Project budget development and management, including preparation and submission of progress and financial reports, tracking and management of costs ensuring all outputs meet project objectives.Staff management and development, including appraisals, development/​training, workload control, and work health and safety requirements.Engagement with laboratory samples and citizen science methods to gather evidence on environmental problems and solutions, with support from specialised work areas within Thames21.Work with the Assistant Head of Improving Rivers, other Thames21 teams and external partners to expand and develop the Evidence Programme in line with the 5‑year plan.Stakeholder engagement and management by developing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders internally and externally, including funding bodies.Support an environment of best practice in project management, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and policies.Positively contribute to Thames21 core values where individuals feel safe, secure and supported.Ability to work outdoors in a riverside environment.
