A Wilder Walkmill Apprentice Co-ordinator

West Cumbria Rivers Trust is a registered environmental charity dedicated to the preservation and improvement of the wildlife and habitats of rivers, lakes and the surrounding countryside in West Cumbria. We are a successful Rivers Trust with a territory covering several principal river catchments which include seven iconic lakes, spanning a substantial part of the Lake District National Park and West Cumbria. We have an impressive track record of successful delivery of projects and a steady growth and are looking to employ new staff members on our National Lottery Heritage Fund project. WCRT has been successful in securing a £2.3 million lottery funded project at Walkmill Community Woodlands near Whitehaven, West Cumbria. This exciting role will be recruiting and managing the second cohort of apprentices doing their Countryside Worker level 2 apprenticeship scheme at Walkmill Community Woodlands and across West Cumbria, with the aim of engaging young people in a lifelong career in the environmental conservation sector. The successful candidate will have a Degree/​HND in environmental/​conservation qualification (or equivalent experience) and at least 3 years relevant practical environmental conservation experience. You will have the skills required to manage and supervise apprentices and develop and deliver their training and the passion and commitment to motivate and encourage them to complete the Countryside Worker qualification. You will also have effective and sympathetic communication (verbal, written and electronic) with a broad section of society, particularly working with young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Seasonal Monitoring Assistant

Ribble Rivers Trust (RRT) is a regional charity established in 1998 to conserve the Ribble Catchment, particularly its rivers, brooks, becks, and streams. The role will also work with our Citizen Science volunteers to aid in the collection of this data. As such, the Trust is looking to recruit a competent and enthusiastic person who will be joining a creative team, committed to making a difference to the environment through an evidence-driven approach. This person will have experience in assisting with a range of monitoring techniques and environmental surveying and lab-based analysis, including data collection, data entry and maintenance of equipment. Summer Placement — Electrofishing Survey Assistant

West Cumbria Rivers Trust is an environmental charity based in Keswick, Cumbria, working to improve watercourses for people and wildlife. With support from local angling clubs, riparian owners, and other funding bodies, the Trust undertakes an extensive juvenile salmonid survey programme within the River Derwent, Ehen and Irt catchments which has run for the last ten years. This provides vital data to target watercourse improvement work undertaken by ourselves and many other partner organisations. The Trust is looking for a survey assistant to help the team undertake the vast number of sites proposed for this survey season. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain experience in working in the environmental sector, participating in conservation and fisheries work. Funded by the UK Government through the Water Restoration Fund, the Windermere Septic Tank Emptying Programme (STEP) aims to assist homeowners and businesses in target areas around Windermere. The project will involve the development, organisation and implementation of a septic tank risk assessment framework. A combination of technical inspections, distribution of educational materials and subsidised emptying will be used to promote sustainable long-term operation and maintenance in line with relevant rules and regulations to deliver benefits to water quality. You will lead on all aspects including monitoring, delivery and reporting, ensuring deadline and project milestones are met. This role requires an energetic and multi-talented individual who is confident, a self-starter and results focussed. Senior Project Officer

Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust (YDRT) is dedicated to the conservation and restoration of rivers and their catchments within the YDRT catchment area. We work collaboratively with local communities and action groups, national parks, and various environmental organisations to deliver impactful projects that restore our rivers, enhance biodiversity, improve water quality, and increase resilience to climate change. The role This is an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Senior Project Officer. You will play a crucial role in delivering YDRT’s Diffuse Metal Pollution Project in Nidderdale, ensuring all milestones and deliverables are met. The successful candidate will be passionate about the water environment with practical knowledge of catchment management, river restoration, pollution issues (preferably those resulting from metal mines and/​or sediment run-off), and managing contractors. You will work closely with a diverse array of partners and stakeholders in Nidderdale to develop and deliver a suite of innovative works that will improve water quality while balancing the sometimes competing needs of a diverse array of stakeholders. You will be working on sensitive sites with designations associated with the abandoned mines such as scheduled ancient monuments and sites of special scientific interest. Therefore, you will need to work around site-specific limitations to develop innovative solutions to the challenges of the role. During the first year you will develop innovative interventions dependent on the pollution source being addressed. Each has a different set of challenges that must be tackled and will involve on the ground investigations and working with specialists to help prioritise and design interventions. A key part of the role will be ensuring the most appropriate technique is used in the right location. Solutions may include both green engineering and nature-based solutions as well as more traditional harder engineering. In the second year you will oversee the delivery of a suite of interventions having obtained all necessary permissions. This will involve working closely with delivery partners and specialist contractors to deliver the works. Experience working with contractors and under CDM regulations would be a distinct advantage. Partnership working is a fundamental part of working at YDRT; the Senior Project Officer/​Project Manager will collaborate closely with a range of organisations including the Environment Agency (EA), Mining Remediation Authority, Natural England, Historic England and Nidderdale National Landscapes. The candidate will be comfortable talking to a range of people which may include farmers and other landowners, specialist groups, volunteers, governmental organisations and other environmental practitioners and will be able to explain complex technical data to non-practitioners. The Senior Project Officer will manage all aspects of their projects, ensuring they are delivered on time and to budget. The Senior Project Officer will also promote the project through the Trust’s website, social media, and newspaper articles, working closely with YDRT’s Communications & Marketing Officer. The role will involve hybrid working, mainly from home, when not on site, as well as hot-desking at the Trust’s office in Pateley Bridge. The post holder will be flexible, with the occasional evening and weekend working. The post-holder will work well both alone and as part of a team of paid staff and volunteers.
