The Rivers Trust is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Manchán Magan, our first ambassador on the island of Ireland.

Manchán was a vitally important spiritual friend to our landscapes and waterways; his ability to kindly and beautifully re-weave forgotten folklore with our modern understanding of rivers into beautiful, emotive stories was unmatched. Through his tireless work, he helped communities worldwide forge stronger, deeper connections with rivers and inspired action for their protection.

Over the past two years, Manchán has given generously of his time and talent to The Rivers Trust. He enthusiastically promoted our Big River Watch campaigns and gave a moving and memorable address at our annual conference last year.

Even when he was ill, his passion for his subject matter was so strong that he recently recorded a beautiful podcast with us, which we will share in the future to honour his legacy. Through all of this, he brought his warmth, honesty, knowledge and unique gift for connecting people to both the history and the future of the natural world.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who ever followed the flow of his words. It was an honour, a privilege, and a joy to have worked with him over the past few years, and he will be greatly missed.

"Mar a shruthann aibhneacha na hÉireann, go sruthaí do chuid gaoise agus do chuimhne trínn, ag múnlú agus ag cur leis an saol."

"As the rivers of Ireland flow, may your wisdom and memory flow through us, shaping and adding to life."

- Mark Horton, All-Ireland Director, The Rivers Trust
