Today The Rivers Trust is taking to eBay to highlight the plight of UK rivers, selling Toxic Dips, the world’s most expensive bath bombs at £300,000 per set.

Experience the unhealthy truth of the UK’s contaminated waterways from the comfort of your tub with a Toxic Dip bath bomb.

Fancy it? No, neither do we. Explore our new campaign and find out how you can turn our rivers from hazardous to healthy at Toxic Dips.com.

The three bath bombs – Tainted Tamar, Septic Severn and Rancid Roding – each contain the same unique mixture of sewage, pesticides, microplastics, urban waste and fertilisers as their namesake rivers. Rather than expecting shoppers to pay to experience the reality of the UK’s contaminated waters in their own baths, we hope the product will raise further awareness of the myriad substances that pollute our rivers.

The £300,000 price tag is just 0.005% of the estimated amount being invested to clean up rivers in the next five years.

Our State of Our Rivers Report 2024 highlighted that no single stretch of river in England or Northern Ireland is in good overall health, and that toxic chemicals that can damage human and environmental health contaminating every stretch of English rivers. Recent reports showing that toxic ‘forever’ chemicals were found in the hair and blood samples of parliamentarians, as well as that pollutants are entering rivers on an enormous scale from road runoff and even domestic pet flea treatments, have made clearer the urgency of action required to improve river health.

Emma Brisdion, Marketing and Campaigns Lead at The Rivers Trust, said: “We don’t expect anyone to actually buy these bath bombs, but we do hope they bring attention to the true extent and cost of UK river pollution. With open water swimming and other water sports growing in popularity, and an increasing awareness of the link between nature and wellbeing, it is our collective responsibility to ensure that our waterways are pollution-free for everyone to safely enjoy. We want to educate people about the steps they can take to protect our rivers.”
