Lidl GB, along with The Rivers Trust and the Wye & Usk Foundation, are using Nature-based Solutions to create a more sustainable food supply chain.
As signatories to the Courtauld 2030 commitment for collaborative action on water, Lidl have been working with The Rivers Trust since 2022 to improve water management in key areas of their egg, poultry, root veg and soft fruit supply chains. They are supporting The Rivers Trust to deliver collaborative catchment projects and Nature-based Solutions (NbS) which improve water quality and biodiversity.
Through this partnership, they have supported the delivery of a new on farm wetland with the Wye and Usk Foundation, which will intercept water that drains from a farm, improving the quality of the water before it makes its way back into the river and provides a natural flood defence.
The new pools are also a new vital freshwater habitat for wildlife. Approaches like this show how businesses can support farms to implement nature-based solutions and contribute to making our catchments and food supply chains more resilient and sustainable.
Lidl are also committed to initiatives such as; Water & Resources Action Programme (WRAP)'s Water Roadmap, Courtauld Commitment 2030, the LEAF Marque Standard, and are a member of Alliance for Water Stewardship.
Case Study: Water Stewardship on the Frome, on farm nature-based buffers
The Wye and Usk Foundation are working alongside farmers to implement on farm nature-based solutions which reduce the risk of flooding, improve water quality and biodiversity, and replenish water in the catchment.
