The Rivers Trust joined leading figures from across the Commonwealth in the historic Cloisters of Westminster Abbey on 9th October to attend the official launch of the book The Commonwealth at 75. Produced by publisher St James’s House in partnership with The History of Parliament Trust – one of the most authoritative academic projects in British history – the publication marks the 75th anniversary of the Commonwealth of Nations.
The River’s Trust’s article in The Commonwealth at 75 brings to light the delivery work done on the ground by local Trusts across the UK to restore and protect rivers, but also outlines the current pressures that face them, such as chemical, sewage and agricultural pollution. It highlights the importance of nature-based solutions and the involvement of willing citizen scientists who have proven invaluable in gathering evidence which is presented to decision-makers.
The publication of the book, which coincides with The Rivers Trust’s 20th anniversary, illustrates the strength of its collective efforts in improving the nations waterbodies, whilst making clear reference to what needs to happen next at a national scale.
Tessa Wardley, Director of Communications and Advocacy at The Rivers Trust says:
“We are delighted to be featured in the Commonwealth at 75, and to have been amongst the many inspiring individuals and organisations that have contributed. The book outlines the Commonwealth’s success, past and present, and explores opportunities and challenges, like the health of our precious rivers, that lie ahead”
