Environmental protection must remain integral amidst planning changes for nationally significant infrastructure projects

Statement in response to the announcement of environmental planning reforms

Today’s announcement on additional funding and a lead regulator approach has the potential to iron out some of the major challenges in the planning system, such as local authority capacity and funding and the complexities of negotiating multiple regulators.

Addressing environmental concerns must remain an integral part of the planning process. They must be factored in at the earliest stage of project planning so that the best outcomes are achieved at the lowest cost, and without nasty surprises interrupting project delivery later down the line. Taking account of environmental risks and opportunities early in the process is better for sustainable growth, communities, and for nature.
