On the day that BP announce they are shunning renewables, the Climate Change Committee – Government's official advisors on climate – has released its report setting out the need for an 87% reduction on emissions by 2040 to keep on track to meet the globally important Net Zero 2050 goal.

The CCC identify five levers to achieving this including nature-based solutions. We know the importance of healthy rivers and catchments to increasing carbon sequestration and adapting to climate change. Particularly key are healthy soils in our catchments and nature highways along our rivers – together they hold onto carbon, they are essential for food production, and they will tackle flood risks and reduce river pollution. The Rivers Trust remains ready to work with like-minded partners across the private and public sectors to reduce carbon emissions and get ready for climate change by nurturing riparian corridors, improving soil health, restoring peatlands, planting trees, and more.
