Press Statement: Reforms to bathing water regulations spark concerns for rivers and their users

The Government’s reform of bathing water regulations makes progress in some areas, and we welcome the re-opening of applications this May. However, we are concerned about the introduction of a feasibility assessment when Government considers new applications.

We understand that the challenges in achieving healthy rivers, lakes and seas are complex, but the rewards of healthy, well-functioning waterways for a thriving future are far greater. We must protect our swimmers, paddlers, and all river users - it is not okay to simply chuck in the towel when things get difficult.

Our Rivers Trusts are supporting local communities who are working hard to gather all the information to submit applications. The Government must support those sites where swimmers and paddlers are active to improve the state of our rivers, lakes and seas for all.
