Leading freshwater conservation charity, The Rivers Trust is inviting farmers in the Castlelwellan and Dundrum areas to attend a free, on-farm demonstration event, to showcase the latest in sustainable water management technology.

The solar pump presentation will take place on Thursday, 10 April 2025, from 10 am to 1 pm near Castlewellan. This event will introduce an innovative solar pasture pump system and inform farmers about its significant benefits for livestock health, farm efficiency and water quality.

Solar pumps are designed to provide livestock with water using solar energy, functioning effectively even under low-light conditions. This system helps protect local waterways by reducing livestock's direct access to streams and rivers, thus reducing pollution, promoting a healthier livestock environment, and preventing loss of land through erosion. Notably, eligible farms within the catchment may be able access these pumps with partial funding under the DAERA-funded Sustainable Catchment Programme (SCP).

This presentation will feature an on-farm demonstration of a solar pump by John Moag of Co Down-based company Flux Enviro, highlighting the technology's ease of installation and reliability.

John said: "We are delighted to be working with The Rivers Trust to showcase our new generation of solar water pumps which can assist local farmers to reduce environmental impact and enhance operational efficiency. As a local company specialising in environmental monitoring solutions, we are committed to delivering efficient, innovative and sustainable solutions to protect our critical watercourses.”

At the upcoming event, The Rivers Trust’s Agricultural Advisor for the Dundrum catchment Laura Hopkins, will provide insights into the positive impacts of water-friendly farming.

Laura said: “The Rivers Trust works alongside farmers by offering non-regulatory advice and support for grant funding.

“We are eager for farmers to see first-hand how simple yet effective these solar pumps are. We want farmers who are eligible for grant funding to feel supported to install simple measures on their farm which can dramatically improve water quality for the whole community. This will be an enjoyable and informative event with plenty of opportunities to ask questions and have conversations without any pressure to commit to installation.

“In addition to the solar pump demonstration, the event will include a presentation on the Sustainable Catchment programme and complimentary light refreshments. This gathering is an excellent opportunity for farmers to learn about effective water management practices and potential funding opportunities to help implement them.”

If you want to attend this solar pump demonstration on April 10th, at 10am, (meeting near Castlewellan, with coach transfer to demo site), please text your name and the number of tickets required to 0753 8375 380 by 5 April 2025. Confirmations and full event details will be sent via return text.
