AQUAMON

The Rivers Trust is a partner in the AQUAMON Project (running from June 2025 - December 2028), funded through the EU’s Horizon Europe project fund. Aquamon aims to develop an advanced urban water monitoring and control system utilising new and emerging smart technologies to support communities understand water quality and identify sources of pollution across their water systems in real-time. 

Urban water pollution, resulting from rapid urbanisation, industrialisation, and climate change, poses a significant threat to public health and the environment, compromising water quality. Specifically, water quality deterioration is linked to diffuse pollution from pollutant surface and groundwater bodies, disrupting biodiversity and the quality of aquatic ecosystems while exacerbating the global water crisis. Traditional urban water management plans do not include a holistic water quality monitoring approach, ignoring important water pollution sources and pathways. Detecting, preventing, and responding timely to these threats can ensure the preservation of clean and safe water resources, working towards a resilient and sustainable water future for communities that prioritises both public health and environmental well-being.

As part of the project, The Rivers Trust is working alongside Thames 21, who are leading the pilot use case for London. Together we will be working with local communities to implement and test novel water quality measurement technologies. These technologies will be developed collaboratively with AQUAMON partners and local volunteers.
