What happens on the land often ends up in our rivers. Which is why we focus much of our efforts implementing nature-based solutions (NbS) at a catchment scale. Not only do NbS solutions help fix our rivers but they also help build climate resilience for local communities and business. They simultaneously benefit people and nature.
The following pages lead you through various ways in which we are working with nature to create resilient rivers across the UK and Ireland.
Natural Flood Management
Natural flood management (NFM) involves working with nature to reduce the risk of flooding for communities.
We love wetlands! Wetlands are not only key habitat sites, but they can also mitigate other risks such as flooding, especially within built-up environments.
Planting trees for water
Trees are one of the most important aspects of the riparian landscape. When planted in the right place, they provide multiple benefits for people, nature, and wildlife.
River restoration sits at the heart of what we do. On a daily basis, our local Trusts are out in the field, carrying out impactful work to restore and revive freshwater habitats. However, this is no easy feat: industrialisation, urbanisation and agricultural intensification have all left their mark on freshwater habitats.
